A rocket launch from French Guiana caused a glowing spiral in the sky over the East Coast, seen on Nov. 4, 2025.
On November 4, 2025, residents from Maine to Maryland saw a glowing swirl in the sky around 6:10 p.m., likely caused by exhaust from the European Space Agency’s Ariane 6 rocket launch from French Guiana.
The rocket, which carried the Sentinel-1D radar satellite, released spent fuel that froze into ice crystals in the upper atmosphere, creating the spiral pattern when illuminated by sunlight.
The phenomenon, visible due to precise atmospheric and lighting conditions, is a known effect of large rocket launches and poses no threat.
Similar sightings occurred after a previous Ariane 6 launch in August.
