The Pacific Islands Forum sets science-based albacore limits and sustainable rules for South Pacific fishing ahead of global talks.
The Pacific Islands Forum Fisheries Agency has finalized a unified regional position for the December 2025 WCPFC22 meeting, establishing science-based catch limits and equitable access for South Pacific Albacore fishing south of 10° South.
The plan, developed over two years, includes a zone-based allocation system, stricter high-seas transshipment rules, expanded seabird bycatch protections to 25° South, and calls for an independent review of how the WCPFC supports Small Island Developing States and addresses climate change impacts on tuna.
