Northern Ireland's environment minister urges MLAs to create an independent environmental agency to address pollution crises.
Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs Minister Andrew Muir is urging Northern Ireland’s MLAs to support creating an independent environmental protection agency, calling the current system “not fit for purpose” amid ongoing crises including pollution in Lough Neagh, illegal dumping, and poor air quality.
He cited a recent review recommending independent oversight of air and water quality, waste, nature, and marine environments, warning that inaction risks further ecological damage, public health threats, and economic costs.
Muir said legislation could be enacted by the end of the current political mandate if the Stormont Executive agrees in principle, followed by public consultation.
