A Moroccan man was sentenced to five years in prison for trafficking youths to Myanmar scam centers via fake job ads.
A Moroccan court has sentenced Nabil Moafik to five years in prison and a $107,300 fine for human trafficking, marking the country’s first conviction in a case involving recruitment for scam centers in Asia.
Moafik, who denied the charges, allegedly used a Facebook group to promote call-center jobs in Thailand, leading several young Moroccans to be trafficked to Myanmar, where they were forced into online fraud, subjected to torture, and released only after paying ransoms in cryptocurrency.
Prosecutors said he profited from the scheme, while Moafik claimed he was unaware of the criminal nature of the operation.
The case highlights the global rise of scam centers, with the UN estimating up to 120,000 people trapped in such facilities.
Morocco’s Foreign Ministry has previously assisted in freeing dozens of its citizens from these compounds.
