Guatemalan ranchers expand into Belize’s Chiquibul Forest, sparking cross-border conservation efforts.
Cattle ranching is expanding in Belize’s Chiquibul Forest and protected areas, with an estimated 200-acre increase over two years as Guatemalan ranchers encroach up to 1.5 kilometers into Belizean territory.
Despite joint efforts by the Friends for Conservation and Development and the Belize Defence Force involving aerial surveillance, patrols, and fence removal, ranchers repeatedly return to rebuild fences and reestablish herds.
The FCD stresses the need for sustained enforcement, cross-border cooperation, and education, with a full report to be presented at its December 6th AGM.
