Dorcey Applyrs made history as Albany, New York’s first Black mayor, winning the November 2025 election with 83% of the vote, defeating Republican Rocco Pezzulo.
A Democrat and current city chief auditor since 2020, Applyrs, who holds a doctorate in public health, rose through local politics after joining the Albany Common Council in 2013.
She secured the Democratic nomination in June and pledged to prioritize equity, public safety, and economic revitalization using $400 million in state funds.
She will succeed Mayor Kathy Sheehan, who did not seek re-election, and take office in January for a four-year term.
