Australian MP Rick Wilson warns climate policies could cost rural farms $200K yearly by 2030.
Australian Liberal MP Rick Wilson has criticized federal climate policies as a hidden "carbon tax" harming farmers and rural communities, warning they could add over $200,000 annually in costs for a large wheat-sheep farm by 2030.
He argued that policies like the safeguard mechanism and vehicle emissions rules raise input prices, threaten farmland use, and disadvantage rural vehicle needs.
Citing research, he said carbon pricing could increase fertilizer costs by $150–$200 per tonne and trigger a $300 million annual burden from a potential border carbon tax.
His remarks come amid internal Coalition divisions after the Nationals dropped their net zero by 2050 pledge, prompting calls for a unified climate stance.
