A 29-year-old elephant in Delhi died from a rare rodent-borne virus, marking India’s first known case.
A 29-year-old African elephant, Shankar, died at Delhi’s National Zoological Park on September 17 from encephalomyocarditis virus (EMCV), a rare rodent-borne illness causing heart inflammation, confirmed by post-mortem tests.
The virus, typically spread by rats, had no prior detectable symptoms in Shankar, who lived alone since his companion died in 2005.
The case marks the first known instance of EMCV in an elephant in India, raising concerns about biosecurity and rodent control.
Officials are investigating, while the zoo faces scrutiny following its 2024 suspension by the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
