A U.S. court blocked deportation of a man whose murder conviction was overturned after 43 years in prison.
A 64-year-old Indian-origin man, Subramanyam “Subu” Vedam, has had his deportation blocked by two U.S. courts after serving 43 years in prison for a murder conviction overturned in August. Born in India and raised in the U.S. since infancy, Vedam was a lawful permanent resident who applied for citizenship before his 1982 arrest. His conviction, based solely on circumstantial evidence with no physical proof, was vacated after suppressed ballistics evidence emerged. Though immigration authorities seek to deport him over a past non-violent drug charge, courts have stayed his removal pending review by the Board of Immigration Appeals, citing his decades of wrongful imprisonment and contributions while incarcerated.
