Twenty-one candidates apply for two Mill Creek Park District board seats, with appointments pending judge-reviewed selection.
Twenty-one people applied for two open seats on the Mill Creek Metropolitan Park District board after outgoing members Germaine Bennett and Tom Frost stepped down.
The selection process, overseen by a six-member community committee appointed by Mahoning County Probate Court Judge Robert Rusu Jr., is based on a 2016 public input model.
Among the applicants is Dr. Donald Allen, a Youngstown veterinarian and former plaintiff in a lawsuit challenging the park district’s deer reduction program, which was ultimately upheld by Ohio courts.
Both Allen and another candidate, Flak, affirm U.S. citizenship, Mahoning County residency, and no history of criminal or financial misconduct.
Neither has prior park board experience.
The committee will review applications, conduct interviews, and perform background checks, with final appointments to be made by Rusu.
Public access to the process is limited to the meeting’s opening, and deliberations are closed to ensure impartiality.
