South Dakota names snowplows via public contest to boost winter safety and community involvement.
The South Dakota Department of Transportation is hosting its sixth annual snowplow naming contest, accepting entries through December 12, 2025.
Around 700 submissions are typically received from individuals, schools, and businesses, with SDDOT staff selecting finalists.
One name will be chosen for each of the state’s 12 regions in January, with the winning snowplows assigned to active service.
Since the contest began, 60 plows have been named and remain in use.
The initiative promotes winter safety awareness, community engagement, and preparedness, supported by resources like the Winter Weather Hub at dot.sd.gov and outreach efforts including educational materials and the Blizzard Bracket competition.
