South Africa reappoints Mosotho Moepya to lead election commission ahead of 2026 polls.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has appointed Mosotho Moepya to a second seven-year term as chairperson of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), with Joyce Pitso and Judge Dhaya Pillay named as full-time and part-time commissioners, respectively.
The appointments, effective ahead of the 2026 local elections, aim to strengthen electoral integrity amid declining voter turnout.
Moepya, who has led the IEC since 2022, and Pitso, an experienced African elections consultant, were selected following a process involving key national institutions.
The IEC oversees national, provincial, and municipal elections, certifies results, and maintains the voters’ roll.
