SkyCity takes over Auckland’s $750M convention centre, delayed by fire, set to open Feb 2026 with major economic impact.
SkyCity has officially taken over the New Zealand International Convention Centre in Auckland from Fletcher Building, marking the end of a 10-year, $750 million project delayed by a major 2019 fire and cost overruns.
The venue, set to open in February 2026, will host up to 4,000 attendees and is expected to attract 33,000 international delegates annually, generating $90 million in economic impact.
Despite SkyCity’s $330 million legal claim against Fletcher Building, analysts view it as unlikely to succeed.
The centre, designed by top architects and endorsed by the government, will feature New Zealand’s largest theatre and banquet hall and carry the FernMark for sustainability.
