Rep. Jesús "Chuy" García won’t run for re-election in 2026, with his chief of staff expected to take his seat.
U.S. Rep. Jesús “Chuy” García of Illinois’ 4th District has decided not to seek re-election in 2026, sources confirm, with his chief of staff, Patty García, expected to succeed him.
The move, made just before the filing deadline, has drawn criticism from some who view it as a top-down selection that bypasses a competitive primary.
The decision adds to a wave of retirements in Illinois’ congressional delegation, including five open House seats and an open Senate race.
Republican Lupe Castillo and Working Class Party candidate Ed Hershey also filed for the seat.
García, a longtime Chicago politician and progressive advocate, has served since 2018.
The final primary ballot will be approved on January 8.
