flag PowerWood Canada to build two biofuel plants in Alberta, using fire-damaged timber to make low-carbon pellets, creating jobs and cutting emissions.

PowerWood Canada Corp. plans to build two biofuel facilities in northern Alberta, converting fire-damaged timber into low-carbon black pellets to replace coal. The first plant near La Crete, using Valmet’s steam explosion technology, will begin construction in spring 2026, produce 350,000 tons annually, and emit 94% less CO2 than coal while delivering 87.5% of coal’s energy. It will create over 500 jobs and use renewable Crown forestry licenses for a 15–20-year feedstock supply. A long-term agreement with a Japanese buyer ensures full off-take of output. The second facility is planned near High Level, with potential expansion in eastern Canada. The company, backed by CAD$40 million in seed funding, aims to list on the Toronto Stock Exchange in 2026.
