Akiin Shuga, the 50-year-old Nigerian musician and founder of the Shuga Band, has died in New Brunswick, Canada, on October 30, 2025.
Born Akinloye Tofowomo in 1975, he overcame polio to become a transformative figure in Nigeria’s live music scene, leading a 14-piece ensemble known for high-energy performances.
Through Shuga Entertainment and the Association of Music Band Owners of Nigeria, he raised industry standards, championed musicians’ rights, and introduced innovations like choreography and digital sound engineering.
A Berklee College of Music graduate, he also founded the Shuga Limb Foundation and served as a Polio Ambassador, advocating for people with disabilities.
Tributes have honored him as a cultural icon, mentor, and pioneer who reshaped live music in Nigeria and beyond.
