Microsoft pays $5.8B to access Nvidia AI chips via IREN’s Texas data center, boosting its AI capacity.
Microsoft has secured a $9.7 billion, five-year agreement with data-center operator IREN to access Nvidia’s advanced AI chips, helping alleviate computing capacity shortages.
The deal, which includes a $5.8 billion prepayment, will enable Microsoft to expand its AI infrastructure without building new data centers or securing additional power.
IREN will deploy Nvidia’s GB300 chips at its 750-megawatt facility in Childress, Texas, starting in 2025, with phased rollout through 2026.
The centers will use liquid cooling and run on renewable energy.
IREN also signed a $5.8 billion hardware deal with Dell Technologies.
The partnership, which sent IREN’s shares up over 20%, supports Microsoft’s ongoing AI investments and follows its increased stake in OpenAI, which boosted the company’s valuation to $4 trillion.
