Michael Wear, a Malgana man from Western Australia, has become the first recipient of Australia’s Prime Minister’s Prize for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Knowledge Systems.
He founded Tidal Moon in 2017, the nation’s first Indigenous-owned and led sea cucumber fishery and marine restoration enterprise, based in Shark Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The initiative uses traditional ecological knowledge combined with modern science to restore seagrass ecosystems damaged by a 2011–2012 heatwave, focusing on sustainable harvesting and rebuilding marine biodiversity.
Tidal Moon also trains Indigenous people to become stewards of Country, promoting long-term environmental and economic resilience.
Wear expressed pride in the honor and emphasized the need to ensure the award’s legacy endures for future generations.
