Ireland’s critical systems are highly vulnerable to cyberattacks due to widespread weaknesses in key networks.
Ireland’s critical infrastructure is "extremely vulnerable" to cyberattacks, with about 349,000 networks—3.6% of the total—showing detectable weaknesses, including 98 out of 200 key organizations in government, healthcare, and higher education.
David Silke, a cybersecurity expert from Centripetal, warned that outdated or poorly protected systems could be exploited by commercial or state-backed hackers, potentially enabling attacks to spread internationally.
He highlighted risks to Ireland’s digital economy and reputation, especially given its reliance on foreign investment, and cited AI-generated disinformation—like a fake video during the presidential election—as a growing threat.
Silke stressed that most vulnerabilities can be identified before an attack and urged stronger national cybersecurity leadership, proactive threat intelligence use, and improved defenses to prevent major breaches.
