flag George Banks, who killed 13 in a 1982 Pennsylvania shooting spree, died in prison at 83 from kidney cancer.

George Banks, the convicted mass murderer responsible for a 1982 shooting spree in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, that killed 13 people, including five of his children, died at age 83 in Phoenix State Prison from kidney cancer. He was sentenced to life in prison after being deemed mentally incompetent for execution, following a rampage that began at his home, involved an AR-15 rifle, and included killings at a trailer park and his mother’s house before a four-hour standoff ended with his surrender. Banks claimed he killed his children to protect them from racism, and during his trial, he displayed graphic photos of victims despite objections. Survivors, including one teenager, had expressed frustration that he was not executed. His death was confirmed by the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections and Montgomery County Coroner Dr. Janine Darby.
