A fire damaged the Fairy Falls Track in Auckland, destroying key structures just over a year after its reopening.
A fire on Sunday morning severely damaged the Fairy Falls Track in Auckland’s Waitākere Ranges Regional Park, destroying a platform, 80 meters of stairs, and a bridge just over a year after the track reopened following a $1.6 million restoration.
Six Fire and Emergency New Zealand crews extinguished the blaze by 12:45 p.m., after a 25-minute hike to reach it, with the affected area larger than a soccer field.
The track, closed for six years due to kauri dieback disease, remains closed for cleanup and assessment.
Officials expressed disappointment, stressing that fires are banned in regional parks.
The cause is under investigation, and 11 western tracks remain closed.
