Fenland Council opposes UK’s reorganisation plan, calling it flawed and harmful to rural areas, and backs Option D as least damaging.
Fenland District Council is set to oppose the UK government’s local government reorganisation plan, calling it “fundamentally flawed” and warning all options would harm residents, especially in rural areas.
At a November 7, 2025, meeting, councillors are expected to back a letter from leader Cllr Chris Boden arguing the proposed 300,000–500,000 population thresholds are unrealistic for rural communities and that the process is overly costly and counterproductive.
The council supports Option D—creating three unitary authorities in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, including a combined Cambridgeshire Fens authority—as the least damaging alternative.
Boden urges the government to halt the current plan and establish a Royal Commission for a more evidence-based review.
The decision will be reviewed by the cabinet the same day.
