Executive producer Matthew Carney resigns from ABC’s Four Corners after controversy over reporter Mahmood Fazal’s undisclosed podcast work.
Matthew Carney, executive producer of ABC’s Four Corners since 2022, has resigned after the show’s final 2025 episode, with the ABC stating his departure is unrelated to an ongoing investigation into reporter Mahmood Fazal.
Fazal is under scrutiny for co-hosting a podcast funded by cryptocurrency casino Vegastars, which included gambling ads and raised concerns over undisclosed payments.
Carney initially approved Fazal’s involvement but withdrew support after learning of the ad content.
The ABC confirmed Fazal’s appearance lacked final approval and has launched a probe with an external legal firm.
Allegations include a $13,000 cash payment and encrypted messages suggesting threats against a YouTuber, though Fazal’s lawyer claims funds were for crew.
Four Corners saw a slight drop in viewership to 929,000 in 2024–25, while other ABC programs grew.
Carney, a three-time Walkley Award winner, will remain until a successor is named.
