China accelerates renewables and EVs, targeting 3,600 GW of clean energy by 2035.
China, the world’s top greenhouse gas emitter, is expanding renewable energy and electric vehicles rapidly, with solar and wind capacity reaching 1,482 gigawatts in 2024 and EVs making up nearly half of new car sales.
It aims to boost renewables to 3,600 gigawatts by 2035 and increase non-fossil fuel energy use to over 30%, while pledging a 7–10% emissions reduction by 2035 without setting a baseline year.
The country also plans to expand its carbon trading scheme to major industries and increase forest cover to 24 billion cubic meters, though experts say deeper cuts are needed to meet the 1.5°C climate goal.
