Canada launches dispute over Stellantis moving Jeep production from Ontario to Illinois, citing breached contracts and lost public funds.
Canada has launched a formal 30-day dispute resolution process against Stellantis over its decision to move Jeep Compass production from Brampton, Ontario, to Illinois, citing breaches of government contracts tied to billions in public funding.
Industry Minister Mélanie Joly called the move unacceptable, emphasizing the need to recover taxpayer investments and restore production, as the Brampton plant remains inactive with around 3,000 workers furloughed.
The dispute centers on commitments linked to a $15-billion EV battery plant project in Windsor and other incentives, with Ottawa asserting contractual obligations were violated.
While Stellantis maintains the plant is paused, not closed, and no jobs have been cut, officials say the shift undermines job guarantees and public investment.
The process, set to begin by end of day November 3, 2025, could lead to financial penalties and reflects Ottawa’s broader push to enforce accountability in auto sector deals.
