A California jury awarded former prison psychologist Dr. Beth Fischgrund $16.8 million after finding the state failed to protect her following a credible threat from an inmate who said he wanted to cut off her head.
Fischgrund, who worked through a contract agency due to staff shortages, reported the threat and raised safety concerns but was told it was not credible and remained in the unit.
She was fired two days after formally reporting the threat and later learned she was blacklisted from prison work and her personal details were circulated in flyers, fueling damaging rumors.
The jury found the state retaliated against her, awarding damages for lost earnings, emotional harm, and defamation.
The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation declined to comment and did not say if it will appeal.
