Bangladesh's Jamaat-e-Islami apologizes for past actions since 1947 ahead of 2025 elections, without naming specific offenses.
Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami leader Shafiqur Rahman has issued a broad, unconditional apology for the party's "past mistakes" from 1947 to present, ahead of the February 2025 national elections, without specifying particular events or crimes.
Speaking in New York on October 22, he said the apology covers all harm caused, rejecting calls to limit it to 1971.
Critics remain skeptical, noting the absence of explicit acknowledgment of the party's role in the 1971 Liberation War, including collaboration with Pakistan and formation of militias linked to atrocities.
The apology follows the lifting of a ban on the party after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s resignation in August 2024, allowing it to re-enter politics, participate in student elections, and form alliances.
El Jamaat-e-Islami de Bangladesh se disculpa por acciones pasadas desde 1947 antes de las elecciones de 2025, sin nombrar ofensas específicas.
