Alberta begins search for new auditor general despite incumbent’s offer to extend term for ongoing audits.
The Alberta government has launched a search for a new auditor general despite incumbent Doug Wylie offering a two-year extension to complete ongoing investigations, including a probe into health-care contracting and a report on lab service privatization.
Wylie, whose term ends in April, said the extension would ensure key audits are finished and a smooth transition.
The UCP-led legislative committee moved forward with the search, citing standard practice and the need for a merit-based process, while opposition NDP members accused the government of politically motivated actions.
Wylie’s office requires nearly $1 million in additional funding to audit the province’s complex health-care restructuring, which could delay work if funding isn’t approved.
The committee has deferred a final decision on Wylie’s extension until he submits budget details in December.
