Sydney's M1 metro extension to Bankstown delays to Sept 2026 due to safety and tech upgrades.
Sydney’s final M1 metro line segment, linking Sydenham to Bankstown, is now projected to open in September 2026, two years behind schedule, due to complex upgrades including high-speed testing, safety adjustments, and installation of gap fillers.
The project, converting the aging T3 Bankstown line into a driverless metro, has required replacement buses since September 2024.
Testing began in April at low speeds, with future phases aiming for 100 km/h, pending national safety approval.
The full line, with its first section opening in 2019, aims to ease long-standing rail congestion across Sydney.
