Soraya Martinez Ferrada won Montreal's mayoral election, ending eight years of left-leaning leadership.
Soraya Martinez Ferrada, a former federal Liberal minister and Montreal city councillor, has been elected mayor of Montreal in the November 2, 2025, municipal election, defeating Projet Montréal’s Luc Rabouin.
Representing the centrist Ensemble Montréal party, she secured about 44% of the vote with half the polls reporting, leading by nearly 17,000 ballots.
Her victory marks a shift from eight years of left-leaning governance under outgoing mayor Valérie Plante.
Martinez Ferrada, a Chilean refugee who arrived in Canada at age eight, pledged to end homeless encampments within four years, triple the city’s homelessness budget, and audit bike lanes within 100 days, potentially leading to changes.
Ensemble Montréal won 41 of 65 municipal council seats.
Voter turnout was 27% by 4:30 p.m.

Across Quebec, several incumbents were re-elected, and over 4,500 candidates, including 564 mayors, were elected by acclamation.
