Queensland’s CFMEU corruption inquiry faces turmoil after four lawyers quit, prompting concerns over its credibility despite promises of reform and new hires.
Queensland Premier David Crisafulli declined to explain the sudden resignations of four lawyers from the state’s CFMEU corruption inquiry, citing personal challenges faced by commissioner Stuart Wood KC.
The departures, including senior counsel Liam Kelly KC and three junior barristers, have sparked concerns over the inquiry’s stability and credibility, with reports of internal disputes over management and strategy.
The inquiry, launched after major corruption exposés in the construction sector, aims to address systemic issues like intimidation and misogyny linked to the CFMEU.
Crisafulli maintained the probe is focused on reform, not politics, and said new legal staff are being hired.
Union leaders, however, warned the resignations undermine public trust and questioned the inquiry’s impartiality.
Public hearings are still expected.
