Over 150,000 evacuated in Philippines ahead of Typhoon Kalmaegi’s Nov. 3 landfall.
Over 70,000 people in the Philippines have been evacuated from coastal areas in Eastern Samar and nearby provinces as Typhoon Kalmaegi, known locally as Tino, approached with sustained winds of up to 120 kph and gusts near 150 kph. The storm, located about 235 kilometers east of Guiuan, was forecast to make landfall on November 3, bringing torrential rains, storm surges up to 3 meters, and destructive winds. Authorities issued mandatory evacuations in towns like Guiuan, Palo, and Tanauan, many of which were devastated by Typhoon Haiyan in 2013. Emergency teams, including military and coast guard personnel, assisted in relocation efforts. The region, still recovering from a 6.9-magnitude earthquake in September, remains highly vulnerable due to frequent typhoons and geographic exposure.
