A fire on November 2 destroyed the main building of the historic Mont-Dieu Carthusian monastery in northeastern France, a site known as the “Notre-Dame of the Ardennes” and designated a historic monument since 1946.
The blaze, reported by nearby walkers, consumed the roof and floor, leaving only the walls standing.
Firefighters arrived at 10 a.m. and contained the fire by 4 p.m., though the structure remains at risk of collapse.
The 12th-century monastery, rebuilt in the 17th century, had no artworks inside at the time.
The cause is unknown.
