North Carolina holds meetings on the $3.2 billion I-77 South Express Lanes project, aiming to ease congestion with toll lanes and infrastructure upgrades.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation and N.C. Turnpike Authority are holding public meetings on Nov. 12 and 13 to discuss the $3.2 billion I-77 South Express Lanes project, the state’s most expensive transportation initiative.
The project, still in planning, would add toll lanes to 11 miles of I-77 in south Charlotte, from the South Carolina border to Uptown, with goals to reduce congestion and improve travel times.
It includes rebuilding interchanges and bridges, creating new access points, and building direct connectors.
The Charlotte Regional Transportation Planning Organization supports a public-private partnership with safeguards like toll rate caps and transit benefits.
NCDOT has held 25 community meetings since January, and construction has not yet begun.
