Miami Beach launches "Concrete Coral," an underwater art and reef project with 22 concrete cars to boost marine life and tourism.
A new underwater sculpture park off Miami Beach, called "Concrete Coral," has launched with 22 life-sized cars made of marine-grade concrete, forming the first phase of a project to create artificial coral reefs.
Installed about 800 feet from shore and 20 feet below the surface, the cars will be seeded with 2,200 native gorgonian corals grown in a local lab, many resilient to past bleaching events.
Funded in part by a $5 million city bond and seeking $40 million more, the initiative by nonprofit REEFLINE combines art, science, and conservation to boost marine biodiversity and support ecotourism through snorkeling and diving.
Future phases include sculptures inspired by a blue whale heart and starfish patterns.
The project also features community education programs and a floating marine learning center.
