A Marlborough man died in a high-speed crash after driving severely impaired by alcohol and cannabis, police say.
Tachyon Hutt, a 23-year-old Marlborough man, died in a high-speed crash on State Highway 6 in July 2025 after driving while severely impaired by alcohol and cannabis, with blood alcohol levels over four times the legal limit and detectable cannabis.
Despite warnings from a friend, he drove recklessly—performing a burnout, speeding, and swerving—before losing control on a bend, crossing the centerline, and crashing into a power pole at 139–154 km/h.
He died from fatal head and chest injuries.
Police found no mechanical issues or road hazards, and cellphone use was considered possible but unconfirmed.
The coroner acknowledged Hutt’s history of personal struggles but could not link them to the crash.
No new safety recommendations were issued, as existing campaigns already address impaired and speeding driving.
