A man in Thirsk faces £38 per flag fines for displaying St George’s Cross flags on public property, after council removed over 120 due to safety concerns.
A man in Thirsk, North Yorkshire, has been warned he will be charged £38 per St George’s Cross flag if he continues displaying them on public property, after over 120 were removed by the council.
Shaun Remmer, who spent more than £600 on the flags, criticized the council for spending at least £4,560 on removals while road damage remains unaddressed.
The council said the flags pose safety risks, including blocking signs and CCTV, endangering those climbing ladders on highways, and creating hazards when flags come loose.
Officials stated the actions were necessary for public safety and compliance with regulations, and that the issue has caused community division.
