Kenya opens Africa’s first green fertiliser plant, cutting emissions and import reliance.
Kenya launched an $800 million green fertiliser plant in Olkaria, Nakuru County, powered by 165MW of geothermal energy, producing 480,000 tonnes of fertiliser annually—Africa’s first such facility.
The project, a joint venture between China’s Kaishan Group and KenGen, aims to reduce reliance on costly imports, which exceeded 600,000 tonnes in 2023 and nearly 443,000 tonnes in early 2025.
It is expected to cut over 600,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions yearly, create over 2,000 jobs, and generate more than $13 million in annual profits for KenGen.
President William Ruto hailed it as a milestone in food security, green industrialization, and investor confidence, urging support for new national funds to finance infrastructure through private partnerships.
