Jain monk begins hunger strike in Mumbai demanding reopening of closed pigeon feeding site.
Jain monk Nileshchandra Vijay began an indefinite fast on November 3, 2025, in Mumbai demanding the reopening of the historic Dadar Kabutarkhana, a century-old site for public pigeon feeding closed by the BMC.
The protest opposes the civic body’s decision to restrict feeding to four distant alternate locations, which the monk argues are inaccessible to pigeons and have led to mass deaths.
The BMC cites health concerns and says the closures are temporary, pending an expert report and court guidance.
Feeding at new sites is limited to 7–9 a.m. and overseen by NGOs.
The Jain community offers to fund land for a new site within 2 kilometers of the original.
