Irish forester uses Miyawaki method to restore woodland on small plots with native plants and biochar.
Forester Daniel Monaghan is leading a community project in County Cavan, Ireland, to restore ancient woodland ecosystems on five-square-meter plots using the Miyawaki method.
By densely planting up to 80 native trees and shrubs just a foot apart, the technique achieves canopy closure in as little as three years, mimicking natural forest gradients.
Participants use biochar—charcoal made by flash-cooling burnt wood—to improve soil health, enhance water retention, and support microbial life, with comfrey tea used to inoculate the biochar and prevent nutrient loss.
The initiative, supported by Monaghan’s company and ecologist Roisin Donnelly, aims to boost biodiversity, reduce reliance on chemical fertilizers, and empower communities to create self-sustaining mini-forests in small urban and rural spaces.
