In the FIDE World Cup 2025 in Panaji, Goa, Indian players Surya Shekhar Ganguly, Raunak Sadhwani, Karthik Venkatraman, and M Pranesh advanced to the second round after winning or drawing their first-round matches. Ganguly defeated Ahmadzada in 28 moves, Sadhwani won with black in 39 moves, Karthik forced resignation in 39 moves, and Pranesh drew with Kazakhstan’s Satbek Akhmedinov in a rook-pawn endgame. IM Aronyak Ghosh upset Poland’s GM Mateusz Bartel to force a tiebreak. Four other Indians advanced via rapid tiebreaks after drawing. Women’s world champion Divya Deshmukh was eliminated after losing 0–2 to Greece’s GM Stamatis Kourkoulos-Arditis in a 73-move game. The single-elimination tournament features 206 players from 82 countries and is named the Viswanathan Anand Cup.
