Former South Carolina sheriff pleads guilty to stealing over $50K in taxpayer funds for personal use and drug expenses.
Former Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright, 60, has pleaded guilty to federal charges including wire fraud and conspiracy to steal from federally funded programs, admitting to misusing over $50,000 in taxpayer funds from 2017 to 2024.
Court records show he used a county-issued credit card for more than 100 personal purchases, including over $5,000 on food, cigarettes, apps, an iPad, and other items, and diverted funds from the sheriff’s Benevolence Fund to buy pain medication, allegedly due to opioid addiction.
He also paid a drug dealer for pills and kept about 150 pills meant for disposal.
Wright expressed remorse in court, accepting full responsibility, and faces up to 20 years in prison and hundreds of thousands in restitution.
