Colombia's ELN clashes with FARC dissidents and U.S. forces stall peace talks despite Petro’s “total peace” pledge.
Colombia’s ELN guerrillas remain active in the Catatumbo region along the Venezuela border, where ongoing clashes with dissident FARC factions and U.S. military operations have stalled peace talks despite President Gustavo Petro’s pledge of “total peace.” The ELN, estimated at thousands of fighters, controls territory with little government presence, taxing local communications and exploiting drug trafficking routes.
The U.S. has conducted strikes in the Caribbean, killing over 60 people and destroying vessels, accusing the ELN of drug trafficking, which the group denies, calling the actions imperialist aggression.
Tensions remain high as both sides trade accusations, and while the government says talks could resume, the ELN describes the current situation as “peace of the graves.”
