The Black-spot Royal butterfly, newly found in Sikkim, is protected under India’s wildlife law.
The Black-spot Royal butterfly (Tajuria luculentus), previously known from Manipur, Meghalaya, Nepal, and Arunachal Pradesh, has been recorded for the first time in Sikkim during a survey on April 19, 2025, in Dzongu’s Noam Panang.
Observed feeding on tree flowers alongside 30–35 other species, the butterfly is legally protected under India’s Wildlife (Protection) Act.
The finding, published in the March-June 2025 issue of Bionotes, highlights Sikkim’s rich biodiversity, home to over 720 butterfly species, and suggests more undiscovered species may exist in the Eastern Himalaya region.
