Starting November 1, 2025, Australia requires all new electric vehicles to emit audible alerts at speeds of 25 km/h or less via an Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System (AVAS) to improve pedestrian safety, especially for people who are blind or have low vision.
The rule, aimed at reducing collisions linked to silent EVs, aligns Australia with the EU, U.S., and Japan.
Advocacy group Vision Australia cited a 35% collision rate among visually impaired individuals and over $1.2 billion in annual pedestrian crash costs.
The mandate also applies to electric trucks and buses, reflecting a broader push for safety as EVs are expected to dominate the fleet by 2050.
