Worcestershire County Council’s plan to merge all six district councils into one unitary authority by 2028 has sparked criticism from Green Party councillors, who say the proposal was developed by unelected officials without public or councillor input.
The “One Worcestershire” plan, which would reduce Worcester’s councillors from 45 to 20, aims to meet government population requirements and improve efficiency, but opponents argue it undermines democratic accountability.
Alternative two-council models, backed by most district councils, were developed with broader consultation.
The final proposal will be reviewed on November 6 before being submitted to the government by month’s end.
