UK to spend £9bn rebuilding military housing, reversing 1996 privatisation.
The UK government has launched a £9bn plan to renovate, modernize, or rebuild nearly all 47,700 military homes over the next decade, the largest defense housing renewal in over 50 years. The initiative addresses years of complaints about damp, mold, and poor heating, with about 14,000 homes to be refurbished or replaced. The government will acquire 36,347 homes from Annington Homes, reversing a 1996 privatization and saving millions in rent and maintenance costs. Additional funding and surplus Ministry of Defence land could support up to 100,000 new homes. Defence Secretary John Healey called it a decisive break from underinvestment, aiming to improve living standards and boost morale.
