Pakistan unveils plan to expand ports, shipping, and green shipbuilding to boost maritime sector by 2047.
Pakistan’s Minister for Maritime Affairs Junaid Anwar Chaudhry unveiled a five-point plan at Pakistan Maritime Week 2025 to boost the nation’s maritime sector, including building three new ports, expanding the national shipping fleet to 60 vessels within three years, and launching a Rs12 billion project in Gadani to modernize shipbreaking and shipbuilding.
The government aims to increase the maritime sector’s share of GDP from 0.8% to 4% by 2047, improve port efficiency, reduce sea freight costs, and establish a Maritime Industrial Complex with green technology.
Plans include creating an educational fund for port workers’ children, enhancing logistics, and using AI to improve port operations.
The government also plans to revive the Pakistan Steel Mills using scrap from shipbreaking and establish a new Maritime Academy.
