Over 1,595 people fled Myanmar’s Myawaddy to Thailand after military takeover, triggering Thai security responses and prosecutions.
Over 1,595 foreign nationals and Thai citizens fled KK Park in Myanmar’s Myawaddy region after military forces took control, crossing into Thailand’s Mae Sot district since October 22.
The Royal Thai Army’s Naresuan Force and Ratchamanu Task Force intensified border surveillance, with Thailand lodging a formal protest over demolition risks.
Arrivals, primarily from India, the Philippines, China, Vietnam, and Ethiopia, underwent security and health screenings at key checkpoints.
Of those processed, 680 foreigners were prosecuted—439 fined and deported, 241 jailed—while 32 Thai nationals faced penalties.
Twenty-three individuals were referred to Thailand’s anti-trafficking system, with 18 entering the process and others sent to protection centers.
All remain under monitoring, with no major incidents reported.
