Newcastle tests AI lifeguard tech to cut drowning risks, aiming for faster responses amid rising deaths.
The City of Newcastle is launching a Hunter-first trial of AI-powered lifeguard technology at Wallsend Swimming Centre this summer, using Lynxight AI cameras to monitor swimmers in real time and detect dangerous behaviors.
The system, which sends alerts to lifeguards’ waterproof smartwatches, aims to improve response times by up to six times and address visibility challenges at the pool.
It does not record personal data or identifiable video, focusing instead on movement detection.
The trial comes amid a national rise in drowning deaths—357 reported in Australia in 2025, a 27% increase over the 10-year average, with 129 in NSW.
The technology, already used in over 75 Australian pools, supports but does not replace human lifeguards.
Training is underway, and the system is set to launch in December, with results informing potential expansion to other inland pools.
